Home to Pilot, Sailor, and Platinum — the industry's "big three" — Japan is where fountain pen nibs are still made almost entirely in-house rather than outsourced. That control shows up in famously fine, precise nib sizes (a Japanese fine often writes closer to a Western extra-fine) and in a design tradition that runs from mass-produced steel-nib starters to hand-lacquered urushi collector pieces.
